Dear Director,

Allow me to express my grave concern regarding activist Mao Hengfeng who stated at an appeal hearing on 21 July that she had been repeatedly and severely beaten over the last three months at the Anhui Provincial Women's Re-education Through Labour facility. I fear that she remains at high risk of further torture and other ill-treatment. 

First and foremost, I call on you to release Mao Hengfeng immediately and unconditionally. I also call on you to guarantee that she will not be tortured or ill-treated while she is in custody.

Furthermore, I request that you initiate a full, independent and impartial investigation into the reports that Mao Hengfeng has been tortured or ill-treated in the Re-education Through Labour facility, and ensure that those responsible for torture or ill-treatment are brought to justice, in accordance with international standards.

Finally, I ask for assurances that she will be allowed access to her family and any medical treatment that she may require.
